91��Ƭ will honor the achievements of over 2,300 graduates during its 2026 Commencement, held over four ceremonies on May 20 and 21 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, N.Y. The ceremonies will feature five honorary degree recipients recognized for their exemplary leadership and professional excellence, including four who will deliver addresses to the Class of 2026.

“This is a proud moment for our entire 91��Ƭ community as we launch the Class of 2026 into their careers," said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “These exceptional graduates—resilient, compassionate, and driven—are prepared to lead with purpose. We are equally honored by our five honorary degree recipients who built extraordinary careers by living the very values our students have embraced: service, innovation, and a commitment to creating positive change in the world.”

The ceremonies will be held in person and live streamed to ensure family members, friends, and guests can celebrate alongside the graduates regardless of location.

The 2026 91��Ƭ honorary degree recipients are:

Mark Ronquillo
Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science
Speaker: School of Business and School of Liberal Arts

Mark Ronquillo is the Donald P. Bellisario Professor of Practice at the Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University, a position he assumed in 2024. Prior to joining Penn State, he served as EVP/Executive Creative Director at the New York City office of Saatchi & Saatchi, one of the world's leading international advertising agencies. Over his 15 years there, he led creative work for 12 different Procter & Gamble brands, including category leaders such as Dawn, Cascade, Swiffer, Vicks, Pepto-Bismol, Mr. Clean and Crest.

Mr. Ronquillo's 25+ year advertising career spans major agencies across the United States and internationally, including Saatchi & Saatchi, Publicis, Lowe & Partners, McCann Erickson, APL/London, BBDO West and The Richards Group. His diverse portfolio includes work for prominent brands such as Saab, Honda, Braun, Heineken, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bacardi, Diet Coke, US Army, and Burger King.

A "writer's writer" known for his mastery of the written word, Mr. Ronquillo's creative work has earned recognition from major international award shows and publications, including Cannes, The One Show, Communication Arts, and Graphis. He has also received Effie awards for effectiveness across four different clients, demonstrating both creative excellence and measurable business impact.

Aramina Vega Ferrer, Ph.D.
Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy
Speaker: School of Education and School of Health and Natural Sciences

Aramina Vega Ferrer, Ph.D., is a long-time Bronx resident and former associate professor of Literacy and Multilingual Studies at 91��Ƭ, where she prepared teacher candidates for advanced certificates and the Master of Science program in Teaching Literacy. While at 91��Ƭ, she served as chair of the Department of Literacy and Multilingual Studies and founding director of the School of Education Bronx Parent Center, a first-of-its-kind faculty-led initiative working with Bronx families and educators to increase student achievement in Pre-K–12 and ensure college access.

Dr. Ferrer brings over 30 years of K-12 teaching and leadership experience in developing and implementing innovative instructional programs for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Her career in the New York City school system progressed from Junior High School Teacher of Spanish and English as a Second Language to District Supervisor of Bilingual Education, culminating in her role as Elementary School Principal in the Bronx.

Dr. Ferrer was elected to the New York State Board of Regents by the New York State Legislature in March 2021 and reelected to a five-year term in March 2023, representing Judicial District 12 (The Bronx). She serves as Co-Chair of the Higher Education Committee, which oversees policy, chartering, and regulation for all postsecondary institutions in New York. Her numerous honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from Fordham's Graduate School of Education, the Alumni Achievement Award from Lehman College and the Governor's Outstanding Hispanic Women Achievers Award.

Ena Williams, Ph.D., MBA, RN, CENP, FAAN, FADLN, FSIEN
Honorary Doctor of Science
Speaker: School of Nursing

Dr. Ena Williams is a nationally respected nursing executive and visionary leader who most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive of Yale New Haven Health, one of the nation's premier academic health systems. Her extraordinary career spans more than four decades, beginning in Jamaica at the University Hospital of the West Indies and evolving into pioneering executive leadership. She joined Yale New Haven Hospital in 1992, progressing through roles from staff nurse to coordinator, nurse manager, and nursing director before becoming the first nurse of color to serve as Vice President, Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer of Yale New Haven Hospital, and Chief Nurse Executive of the Health System.

Under Dr. Williams' leadership as hospital CNO, nursing teams achieved remarkable recognition, including an American Credentialing Center Magnet Nurse of the Year award (2022) and a Magnet Prize (2024). She spearheaded transformative initiatives including a nursing leadership academy, the first Nursing DEI task force and summit and raised philanthropic funds to support nursing and unlicensed assistive personnel. Her tenure fostered significant growth in nursing autonomy and established a strong professional governance culture across the organization.

A nationally recognized thought leader in nursing leadership, workforce development, and health equity, Dr. Williams serves as President of the Board of the American Organization of Nursing Leadership and on The Joint Commission Board of Directors. She is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing and has been honored as one of Modern Healthcare's 50 Top Clinical Executives in Healthcare (2024).

Reverend Viviana M. DeCohen '16, M.S. '18
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
Speaker: School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Reverend Viviana M. DeCohen, a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran, serves as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Veterans' Services (DVS), which connects over 630,000 Veterans with the benefits, services, and support they have earned. Commissioner DeCohen oversaw the department's successful elevation from a division in April 2023, significantly expanding DVS's statewide reach. Under her leadership, DVS launched innovative outreach programs such as "Operation Find and Serve" and adopted 15 Veterans Welcome Center Digital Kiosks across New York State, which were recognized with the prestigious Abraham Lincoln Pillars of Excellence Award from the Federal VA.

Commissioner DeCohen has championed inclusive communication and dignified service delivery, leading DVS to embrace the term "for those who have served" to reach individuals who may not identify as Veterans. She launched "Operation Baby," providing essential resources such as diapers, cribs, and baby clothes through a non-social service approach, and updated the department's intake form to better address the specialized needs of Veterans and Military Families. Prior to her appointment as Commissioner, she served as Director of the Mount Vernon Veterans Service Agency, where she founded Kristyn's Closet, a Veterans' Closet that served over 3,000 Veterans within ten months and garnered significant statewide media attention.

Commissioner DeCohen holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science and a master's degree in Health Service Management from Mercy College (now University), where she established two inaugural Veterans Centers and served as a Veterans Academic Advisor. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Gerontology at Concordia University, Chicago. Her dedication to ensuring Veterans have access to essential resources has earned her the affectionate title of "Mama V," and she was named a Women Veteran Trailblazer honoree by the Center for Women Veterans in 2021.

Joseph P. Carlucci, Esq.
Honorary Doctor of Laws

Joseph Carlucci is Partner Emeritus at the law firm Cuddy & Feder LLP, where he was responsible for the industrial development revenue bond practice. Throughout his distinguished legal career, he represented corporations of all sizes on a full range of corporate matters, including business acquisitions and sales, partnership agreements, limited liability company operating agreements and employment contracts. Mr. Carlucci was also active in lending transactions on behalf of borrowers and lenders, and represented real estate entrepreneurs in acquisitions, sales, leasing, financing and obtaining approvals for development projects.

Mr. Carlucci is recognized as one of the region's most active counselors in industrial development agency revenue bond financing. He previously served as an agency chair before representing borrowers, underwriters and issuers in transactions throughout the New York metropolitan area and in numerous states across the country. A military veteran who served as Captain in the U.S. Army (MPC) from 1967-1969, Mr. Carlucci holds a B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1969.

A Westchester native, Mr. Carlucci has been active in numerous civic and professional organizations including the American Bar Association, Westchester County Bar Association, Jacob Burns Film Center, Pace University School of Law, Westchester Community College Foundation Board and the White Plains and Greenburgh Urban Renewal Agencies. He served as a Mercy Trustee from 2002 to 2025, previously serving as Board Vice Chair and now as Trustee Emeritus. He was honored with the Mercy College Community Leadership Award at the 2018 Trustees' Scholarship Gala.

91��Ƭ will host its 26th Annual International Film Festival from April 21-24, continuing a beloved tradition of bringing world-class cinema to the Mercy community and surrounding areas.

The four-day festival, presented by the School of Liberal Arts, is free and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and neighboring communities. All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall on the Westchester Campus, located at 555 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry.

“For 26 years, this festival has been a cultural cornerstone for our region,” said Steven DeRosa, festival coordinator and senior lecturer for Cinema Studies at 91��Ƭ. “We're proud to share this experience with our neighbors, offering exclusive viewings and meaningful conversations that bring our community together through the power of film."

Each evening features an international film followed by a discussion led by distinguished guest speakers from the 91��Ƭ community and beyond, creating opportunities for attendees to engage with cutting-edge cinema from around the world.

Tuesday, April 21 – “The Girl with the Needle” (Denmark, Poland, Sweden, 2024)

A dark gothic story about young, destitute Karoline in post-WWI Copenhagen who finds work with a charismatic woman running a secret underground adoption agency. Their bond shatters when Karoline uncovers the chilling truth behind the operation.

As the University continues to commemorate its 75th Anniversary throughout the academic year, this special 7.5K race embodies the institution's commitment to community, service, and supporting those in need.

91��Ƭ invites the community to lace up their running shoes for a meaningful cause as the institution celebrates its 75th anniversary. Presented by Conquer The World Endurance and 91��Ƭ’s Exercise Science Program, the 11th and final edition of the Conquer the Trail Race will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, marking both the conclusion of a beloved tradition and a tribute to Mercy's 75 years of transforming lives through education. All proceeds from the race will benefit Mercy's Mav Market, a judgment-free, inclusive and confidential resource that provides nutritious food and personal care items at no cost to anyone in the Mercy community experiencing food insecurity.

“This race represents everything Mercy stands for," said Amanda Bireline, associate professor of Health and Exercise Science at 91��Ƭ. "For 75 years, we've believed in removing barriers to success. The Conquer the Trail Race continues that tradition by bringing our community together to support students facing food insecurity—ensuring they can focus on their education, not their next meal."

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, 91��Ƭ has hosted a series of special events designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and surrounding communities. The Conquer the Trail Race represents the University's belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that community partnerships create lasting impact.

The commemorative 7.5K run will feature a flat, fast out-and-back course along the scenic Croton Aqueduct Trail, with the distance specially chosen to honor the University's 75th anniversary.

Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, and race day raffles will feature prizes from community sponsors. Participants should note that while the course is flat, it runs primarily on natural trail terrain including rocks, stumps, and tree roots.

Registration remains open through race day. Community members can register online at https://mercy.edu/news-events/events/conquer-trail-7.5k or in person on April 18. The first 75 runners who register will receive a limited-edition 75th Anniversary t-shirt and 7.5% off registration with code: ConquerMercy75. Today, 91��Ƭ announced the launch of the Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program, made possible by a transformative philanthropic gift of more than $9 million from the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. The gift represents the largest in 91��Ƭ's history and will support a groundbreaking initiative to prepare highly skilled early childhood educators while addressing the urgent need for qualified early childhood educators in the region.

“We are deeply grateful to the Suzanne McGraw Foundation for this extraordinary gift and partnership, which demonstrates our shared vision for educational access and community impact,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of 91��Ƭ. “The Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program will provide students with a combination of financial assistance, meaningful classroom experiences, and mentorship. This innovative model will create a sustainable, replicable model for aggressively addressing the region’s urgent teacher shortage. Scholars will graduate not only with degrees and experience but as prepared leaders ready to inspire in classrooms, communities, and beyond.”

“The Suzanne McGraw Foundation is excited to partner with 91��Ƭ to address the urgent need to attract and train students for careers in early childhood education, especially for children with special needs,” said the Board of the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. “By providing scholarships and valuable work experience, we hope to create a model for addressing the shortage of qualified early childhood educators and to eliminate the crushing burden of student loan debt.”

Launching in Fall 2026, the program will prepare 25 new early childhood educators each year through a structured, work-integrated degree program. Suzanne McGraw Scholars will receive comprehensive financial support, dedicated mentoring, and robust professional development as they pursue Mercy's B.S. in Teaching Students with Disabilities (PreK–Grade 12) program. Scholars will also have the opportunity to continue into an accelerated M.S. degree in Early Childhood Education at no tuition cost to the scholar.

A distinguishing feature of the program is its earn-while-you-learn model. Scholars will work in early childhood education classrooms throughout their studies, gaining invaluable hands-on experience while receiving financial compensation. Upon graduation, Scholars commit to working in the field for at least one year, ensuring sustained impact in early childhood education when it's needed most.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Latino U College Access (LUCA), a leading Westchester County nonprofit dedicated to supporting low-income, first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. The agreement establishes a collaborative relationship designed to expand postsecondary opportunities, strengthen student support and enhance financial accessibility for LUCA Scholars enrolling at 91��Ƭ. The partnership also reflects 91��Ƭ’s commitment to making higher education attainable by working to provide competitive, need-based financial aid packages to admitted LUCA students.

“This partnership reflects 91��Ƭ’s mission to provide transformative educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of 91��Ƭ. “We are proud to work alongside Latino U College Access in expanding pathways for talented first-generation students and ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive.”

“This partnership with 91��Ƭ reflects our shared commitment to expanding access to higher education,” said Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, founder and executive director of LUCA. ”Together, we are strengthening academic and personal support for first-generation students in Westchester County and creating meaningful pathways to college and lifelong success. In partnership with 91��Ƭ, we are creating pathways to higher education that reflect our joint belief in the transformative power of education — because when students succeed, communities flourish.”

Under the MOU, 91��Ƭ and LUCA will coordinate outreach efforts to LUCA high school students and provide structured support for LUCA Scholars who matriculate at Mercy. LUCA will continue to support its alumni who matriculate at 91��Ƭ through the organization’s Post-Secondary Program, offering mentoring, college and career advising, and when applicable, access to emergency need grants and other financial incentives designed to promote persistence and student success.

91��Ƭ, in turn, will work to meet the full financial need of incoming LUCA Scholars by maximizing federal, state, and institutional aid. Additionally, 91��Ƭ will host annual campus visits to introduce LUCA students to academic programs, student services and the broader campus environment. Mercy will also support LUCA programming by contributing subject-matter expertise and volunteers to initiatives such as College Knowledge workshops and FAFSA completion sessions.

The partnership holds special significance for students who have benefited from both organizations, as it formalizes a pathway they have experienced firsthand—one that combines early college access, sustained mentorship, and a supportive university environment to help first-generation students persist, graduate, and achieve long-term success.

“As an alumna of both LUCA and 91��Ƭ, this alliance means a great deal to me,” said Karol Toral, LUCA and 91��Ƭ alumna. “It represents a major step forward in expanding access to college education for the next generation of Latino scholars and brings together two organizations that were instrumental in my own educational journey. I look forward to seeing how this partnership empowers LUCA Scholars to pursue higher education with confidence, support and the freedom to truly spread their wings.”

Kevin Arpi, LUCA Scholar and 91��Ƭ student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the role both institutions played in his academic growth. “Transitioning from Westchester Community College to 91��Ƭ was a pivotal chapter in my journey,” Arpi said. “I found mentors who believed in me and a community that fueled my passion for biomedical sciences. LUCA played a critical role in supporting that transition, and Mercy provided an environment that helped shape my aspirations and prepare me for the next steps in my career.”

LUCA delivers programs and partners with eight high schools in Westchester County (Bedford, Elmsford, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow, and White Plains).

With more than 25 years of experience in the advertising industry, Woodard brings a wealth of expertise in innovation, leadership and strategic communication to the University’s governing body.

“We are thrilled to welcome Larry Woodard to our Board of Trustees,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “His extraordinary professional accomplishments and deep commitment to community service make him a tremendous asset to 91��Ƭ as we continue to prepare our students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

“I am honored to join the Board of Trustees at 91��Ƭ,” said new Trustee Larry D. Woodard. “Education has the power to transform lives, and I am excited to contribute my experience in creativity, leadership, and innovation to help support Mercy’s mission. Woodard is a highly regarded advertising executive who has led agencies in creating breakthrough campaigns for a diverse roster of clients including General Motors, Motorola, Heineken, Sprint, Western Union, Comcast, GlaxoSmithKline, Kodak, Mars, Earthlink and the Snapple Beverage Group, among many others. His work has earned some of the industry’s highest honors, including two O’Toole Awards for Advertising Agency of the Year, a Gold Effie and the prestigious Cannes Gold Lion for the iconic Oprah Car Giveaway.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Woodard has been an influential leader within the advertising community, serving as chair of the 4A’s New York Council, a director of Advertising Week and a weekly columnist for ABC News. His thought leadership extends to frequent appearances as a lecturer and instructor, as well as media contributions on CNN, CNBC, ABC and the BBC. He is also the co-author of “Inside the Minds: Advertising as a Branding Tool” and “Point Me in The Right Direction,” a book of daily devotionals.

Woodard’s commitment to service is reflected in his long history of board involvement. He has held leadership roles with organizations such as the YMCA, the Spanish Action League and the Board of Visitors for Syracuse University’s Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics. He served on the board of International Speedway Corporation (NASCAR) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research. He currently serves on the NASCAR Foundation board.

His appointment underscores Mercy’s commitment to bringing diverse perspectives and accomplished leaders to its Board of Trustees. His insights and experiences will support Mercy’s mission of academic excellence, innovation and service.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced the launch of its new branding campaign, “Every Moment Matters,” a strategic initiative designed to highlight the university’s commitment to supporting students through every stage of their educational journey. The campaign, which is part of 91��Ƭ’s 75th anniversary celebration and captures the many meaningful moments—both big and small—that shape the student experience at Mercy.

“For 75 years, 91��Ƭ has opened doors and changed lives,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure every student has the support they need to thrive. Because for us, it’s not just about welcoming students through our doors—it’s about walking beside them through every part of their journey. This campaign captures the spirit of our mission, recognizing that every moment that shapes a student’s path toward success matters.”

91��Ƭ worked with creative agency Familiar Creatures, who helped relaunch Mercy College as 91��Ƭ in 2023, to conceptualize and execute the new campaign. Through visual storytelling, the “Every Moment Matters” campaign highlights the human side of higher education and reinforces 91��Ƭ’s student-centered mission. It conveys the message that 91��Ƭ is there every step of the way—ensuring students have the guidance, resources and encouragement they need to succeed.

“The application process has radically changed in the last couple years making it even more paramount that prospective students know who we are and what we’re about.,” said Christian Connelly, associate vice president for Marketing & Communications at 91��Ƭ. “We don’t just showcase and tout the milestones of the college experience; it’s about us being there for them through every moment in between. Familiar Creatures found a memorable and artful way to communicate our value proposition yet again.”

Today, Excelencia in Education, a national leader in catalyzing institutional transformation for student success in higher education, announced that 91��Ƭ has earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. 91��Ƭ is one of 18 colleges and universities to earn the Seal in 2025, reaffirming its place in a group of nearly 50 institutions that are taking responsibility for improving Latino, and all, student success.

Seal of Excelencia certified institutions produce outsized impact on student outcomes — representing less than 1% of all colleges and universities in the U.S., yet enrolling 16% and graduating 18% of Latino students nationwide, as well as enrolling 7% and graduating 8% of all students.

The Seal is a rigorous, data-driven certification, not an award or ranking. Institutions earn the Seal by going beyond enrollment to intentionally serve Latino, and all, students, and by taking responsibility and accountability for providing access to excellence. The Seal framework aligns data, practice, and leadership to move institutions beyond isolated programs toward systemic change and investment that provides institutional value to students, their families, and their communities.

“Seal of Excelencia certified institutions are investing in transformation, ensuring access to excellence, and becoming places where Latino, and all, students thrive,” said Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education. “These institutions have made demonstrable efforts to ensure students’ return on investment in a degree while cultivating talent that fuels our country’s future.”

Higher education, business, philanthropy, and government leaders in Excelencia’s community of common cause convened in Washington, D.C., to recognize 91��Ƭ as one of five institutions that earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. In addition, five other institutions earned certification for the first time, and eight other institutions earned Excelencia’s new Intentionally Thriving Institution (ITI) designation, which extends impact beyond the educational pathway and recognizes positive impact in preparing students for, and connecting them to, the workforce.

“Excelencia is proud to continue to catalyze and support colleges and universities that earn the Seal of Excelencia for their impact and intentional efforts to deliver on the promise of higher education for all students. 91��Ƭ is the largest, private non-profit Hispanic-Serving Institution in New York. Forty-seven percent of Mercy’s undergraduate student population is Hispanic, a number that has grown more than 10% in the past seven years. According to analysis by Excelencia in Education, “Latino College Completion: United States 2023, Mercy is ranked 19th among enrolling and 10th in graduating Latinos in the state of New York.

Mercy is committed to serving and supporting Latino students intentionally, by creating the conditions that maximize their educational success. The University has invested in several transformational strategies to serve Hispanic students and position them to succeed, including its PACT personal mentoring program. Since the advent of the PACT program, retention and graduation rates of Latino and all students at Mercy have seen remarkable improvement.

Before 91��Ƭ earned the Seal of Excelencia for the first time in 2022, university leadership made the decision to join Excelencia’s national Excelencia in Action (E-Action) network. The network includes over 200 higher education leaders committed to advancing Latino, and all, student success on their campuses. This fall, 91��Ƭ kicks off a yearlong celebration of its 75th Anniversary, honoring a journey that began in 1950 with a powerful mission: to provide access and opportunity in higher education. The 75th anniversary is more than a look back—it’s a year to bring students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community together to celebrate Mercy’s impact, progress and possibility.

“For 75 years, 91��Ƭ has been a place where access meets excellence, empowering generations of students to transform their lives,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “This anniversary is not only a chance to honor our past but also to affirm our vision for the future as we continue to thrive and lead in higher education.”

From its early days as Mercy College, through its expansion to a four-year institution in 1961, its transformation into an independent, non-sectarian university in the 1970s, and most recently, its historic transition to 91��Ƭ in 2023, the institution has been defined by growth, resilience and an unwavering commitment to student success.

Today, 91��Ƭ is the region’s largest private minority-serving institution and a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution. The University has more than 73,000 alumni, serves over 9,000 enrolled students across six academic schools and offers more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and certificate programs. Manfra joins Mercy from Georgian Court University, where he also served as vice president for institutional advancement. There, he provided strategic leadership across all advancement functions, including fundraising, alumni relations, grants, marketing and communications, government relations and securing all non-tuition revenue.

Prior to his role at Georgian Court University, Manfra held several leadership positions at George Washington University (GW), most recently as senior associate vice president for alumni relations and annual giving. In February 2017, he was named interim vice president for development and alumni relations and led the team that completed GW's Making History comprehensive campaign. That $1 billion campaign was the largest in their history and was completed one year ahead of schedule.

His leadership journey also includes roles at Syracuse University, where he oversaw annual giving and alumni relations as the inaugural assistant vice president for alumni engagement; the University of Northern Colorado, where he served as assistant vice president for alumni relations and led efforts to reorganize the alumni association and Rutgers University, where he was responsible for engaging alumni and donors around the world.

A New Jersey native, Manfra began his career at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey, where he held roles in human resources, admissions, and advancement. He has held leadership and board positions with several professional and civic organizations, including the Council for Advancement & Support of Education (CASE) and the Association of Private College and University Alumni Directors (PCUAD). He is currently first vice president of the board of trustees at Ocean’s Harbor House in Toms River, NJ.

Mercy is among 251 colleges and universities across the country selected by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society for students at two-year colleges.

It was based on analysis from the National Student Clearinghouse, and on data submitted through the four-year institution’s profile on PTK Connect, Phi Theta Kappa’s online tool designed to help students find their best-fit colleges and career pathways.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced the appointment of James B. Jenkins as Chair of the Board of Trustees (BOT). A dedicated member of the Board since 2020, Jenkins brings a dynamic combination of professional experience, strategic leadership and heartfelt commitment to higher education.

“Jim Jenkins has demonstrated a deep commitment to 91��Ƭ’s mission, and we are thrilled to welcome him as Chair of the Board of Trustees,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “As we approach our 75th anniversary and prepare for the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of higher education, we look forward to his leadership in guiding the university into its next era of innovation and impact.”

“I am honored to take on this new role and to support 91��Ƭ at such a pivotal time in its history,” said new Board of Trustees Chair James B. Jenkins. “I look forward to working alongside my fellow trustees, President Susan L. Parish and the broader university community to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality, affordable education.”

Jenkins currently serves as president of Canachagala Corp. where he leads efforts in real asset management, including commodity trade, logistics, infrastructure, risk management, compliance and corporate governance. In addition to leading Canachagala Corp., Jenkins previously held several senior executive roles, including CEO of Westway Group Inc. from 2010 to 2013, where he guided the company through a series of mergers and acquisitions that resulted in its integration with EQT Infrastructure II and ED&F Man. Under his leadership, Westway became North America’s largest producer of liquid feed supplements, with operations spanning 31 locations globally. He also served as managing director of ED&F Man’s Commodity Services Division, president of ED&F Man Cocoa, Inc. and was actively involved with the New York Board of Trade’s Cocoa and Control Committees. Jenkins also served as chairman of the Cocoa Merchants’ Association of America and contributed to several of the organization’s key committees.

Over the past five years, Jenkins has served and contributed to several key committees on Mercy’s BOT, including the Executive Committee, the Academic and Student Affairs Committee, the Audit Committee, the Compensation Committee and the Development Committee. In addition to Board service, he has actively supported athletes, students and alumni alike—most notably through a series of workshops on personal finance and debt management for graduating seniors and alumni, which began in 2021. Beyond his work with Mercy, Jenkins has taught at higher education institutions including Fairfield University’s Dolan School of Business, Penn State University’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the University of Connecticut’s School of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Jenkins is also deeply engaged in community service. He serves as chair of the City of Rye Finance Committee and was previously a board member of the American Red Cross Metro NY North, where he contributed to strengthening resilience and emergency preparedness across the region.

Jenkins succeeds Joseph Gantz, who retired as chair earlier this month after nearly 25 years of service on the Board of Trustees. Appointed chair in 2020, Gantz provided steady, visionary leadership during a time of growth and change for Mercy, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to university.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced that its Bachelor’s degree program in Criminal Justice has been officially endorsed by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) for academic quality, a significant recognition that highlights the program’s academic excellence and commitment to student success.

“This recognition from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences affirms the strength of our curriculum, our commitment to student success, and the excellence of our practitioner-scholar faculty who blend academic rigor with real-world experience,” said Dr. Stuart Sidle, dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at 91��Ƭ.

The ACJS Program Endorsement is awarded to select academic programs that meet the organization’s rigorous standards of educational quality and integrity. 91��Ƭ’s Criminal Justice program underwent a comprehensive evaluation process and demonstrated excellence in areas including curriculum design, faculty qualifications, student learning outcomes and student support services.

In the endorsement letter to Mercy, Jay S. Albanese, Ph.D., chair of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Academic Review Committee, said “Congratulations to you and your faculty, staff, students, and administration on this remarkable achievement. ACJS Endorsement means that your programs have undergone rigorous review and are recognized by your peers as adhering to the best practices in our field.”

By combining 91��Ƭ’s student support services with CRN’s alumni network, this initiative creates a strong foundation for first-generation and low-income students to thrive.

To support these students throughout their college experience, 91��Ƭ will

actively engage with CRN schools through recruitment initiatives such as campus visits and college fairs while eliminating barriers to the application process by offering fee waivers and holistic admissions reviews. The university also commits to providing competitive financial aid that meets a significant portion of students’ demonstrated need, as well as access to pre-college programs and on-campus support networks that enhance inclusion and retention. 91��Ƭ will work closely with CRN to facilitate mentorship opportunities and strengthen communication between its admissions and alumni support teams, ensuring seamless transitions from high school through college completion.

Similarly, Cristo Rey Network will encourage its students to explore and apply to 91��Ƭ while maintaining open collaboration to support their college journey. CRN will provide essential guidance on financial aid processes, track student participation in pre-college programs and maintain check-ins with alumni enrolled at 91��Ƭ. Additionally, CRN will foster professional development for university staff and counselors through events such as the Annual Summit on College Success, webinars, and networking opportunities, ensuring best practices in supporting first-generation and low-income college students.

Cristo Rey alumni currently enrolled at 91��Ƭ have already seen the benefits of this collaboration firsthand.

“Cristo Rey definitely prepared me for college,” said Johan Lopez, a 91��Ƭ junior. “They were like a beacon. The transition between the two was seamless. I am proud to be a student at Mercy. I am doing well. I know my professors. This partnership is great to see.”

“It was a smooth transition because of all the support I got,” said Miranda Tirado, a 91��Ƭ freshman. “I really like it at Mercy.”

“Cristo Rey encouraged me and always pushed me to be better,” said Rosmariel Gil, a 91��Ƭ freshman. “They never gave up on me. At Mercy, I felt very prepared, did not feel I was behind, but prepped for all of my college classes. The support at Mercy has been great. I feel at home here.”

“Cristo Rey guided me and taught me never to give up,” added Bryan Dominique, a 91��Ƭ sophomore. “They allowed me to pick a college that aligned with my passion for computer science and be able to finish earlier and with a master’s degree. As a first-generation college student, I want to make my family proud, I want to make myself proud. The support at Mercy has been great. My mentor is always checking up on me.”

These personal experiences exemplify the goals of partnership providing Cristo Rey students not just with access to higher education, but a solid foundation to succeed.

91��Ƭ kicks off its 25th Annual International Film Festival tonight, bringing acclaimed international films and thought-provoking post-screening discussions to its Westchester Campus from April 22–25. The screenings will take place each evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall at 555 Broadway, Dobbs Ferry, New York. Admission is free and open to the public.

The festival, hosted by the School of Liberal Arts, showcases powerful storytelling from around the world, paired with insightful commentary from distinguished guest speakers.

“The International Film Festival is a big highlight of the School of Liberal Arts calendar every spring, bringing together the Mercy community with film lovers from across our region,” said Peter West, dean of the School of Liberal Arts at 91��Ƭ. “I am grateful to Steven DeRosa and the Festival committee for putting together such a wonderful slate of films and speakers once again this year. 91��Ƭ proudly celebrated the 44th Annual Trustees’ Scholarship Gala, bringing together hundreds of community members for an inspiring evening dedicated to advancing the university’s mission of transforming lives through education. The gala, a signature fundraising event for student scholarships, drew more than 250 attendees and raised over $400,000 to directly benefit Mercy students.

Held at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, the event welcomed trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni from both Mercy and the College of New Rochelle (CNR), community partners, and local leaders, all united in support of higher education access and equity.

“This evening is a testament to what we can achieve when we invest in opportunity,” said Joe Gantz, chairman of Mercy’s Board of Trustees. “For 75 years, our Board has guided Mercy through times of transformation, always rooted in the belief that education changes lives. Scholarships open doors that may otherwise remain closed, and tonight we celebrate that spirit of generosity.”

The evening honored several distinguished individuals who exemplify the values of 91��Ƭ and its deep commitment to community and student success. This year’s honorees included:

Robert (1930–2001), H.D. ’79, and Mary Joyce McCooey – Lifetime Achievement Award
The Honorable Mary E. Sommer (Ret.), CNR SAS ’71 – CNR Legacy Award
Tashauna Wynter ’25 – Student Achievement Award

Vice President of Student Affairs Kevin Joyce served as master of ceremonies, opening the evening with a personal reflection and story about his journey at Mercy. “Years ago, Bob McCooey introduced me to Mercy,” he shared. “So it’s fitting that we honor him and his family tonight.” That sentiment set the tone for a night full of heartfelt reflections and inspirational moments.

One of the night’s most emotional highlights came with the presentation of the Student Achievement Award to senior health sciences major Tashauna Wynter ’25, a Mercy Scholar and leader on campus. Introduced by last year’s recipient Devin Goens ’24, Wynter was praised as a “role model, student leader, advocate, and academic weapon.”

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Wynter reflected on the transformative role scholarships have played in her journey:

“This moment is truly a dream come true—one that has been on my bucket list since I attended my first Trustees’ Gala as a freshman. Standing here today is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the unwavering support of my Mercy family,” she said.
“To those in this room who support Mercy’s scholarship funds—thank you. You are changing lives, opening doors, and creating a ripple effect that will be felt for generations.”

Wynter shared her excitement for the future, announcing she will begin Mercy’s Physician Assistant Program in June. Her goal: to become a PA in women’s health and give back to the communities that have supported her.

91��Ƭ President Dr. Susan L. Parish took the stage to congratulate Wynter and highlighted the importance of Mercy’s student-centered philosophy and philanthropy.

“For 75 years Mercy has been a beacon of opportunity, shaping lives, strengthening communities, and empowering students to achieve their dreams. As we reflect on this remarkable journey, students remain at the heart of our mission. They inspire us just like Tashauna did tonight in absolutely everything we do. When we invest in them, we invest in a brighter future for our communities and our country,” said Parish.

The evening featured powerful video testimonials from students whose educational paths were made possible by donor-supported scholarships, reinforcing the impact of every dollar raised.

In a moving tribute, Joyce introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Robert and Mary Joyce McCooey. “Our next honoree holds a special place in my heart...The McCooey family.”

A touching video tribute featured Mary and their son Bob, Jr., highlighting Bob Sr.’s enduring legacy.

“For dad, Mercy was in his DNA,” said Bob, Jr. “He talked about Mercy all the time.”

Mary added, “Bob was totally consumed in service. He just loved helping. Mercy was special to Bob, so I am thrilled to be a part of Mercy.”

Mary and her son Bob, Jr. accepted the award and he added: “On behalf of the McCooey family, I’d like to say thank you for recognizing my dad and my mom. Thank you for remembering and recognizing my dad all these years later and what he did for the university.”

In a surprise announcement, Joyce introduced the Robert H. and Mary Joyce McCooey Family Endowed Scholarship, a new fund that will carry the McCooey legacy forward by supporting generations of Mercy students to come.

The CNR Legacy Award was then presented to the Honorable Mary E. Sommer, retired judge and proud alumna of the College of New Rochelle’s School of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1971. Introduced by CNR alumna and Mercy trustee Marlene Tutera CNR SAS '71, Sommer was recognized for her decades of service in education and the public sector.

“She is an extraordinary human being who understands education and I am so proud she is the recipient of the CNR Legacy Award,” said Tutera.

In her video message, Sommer said, “Both 91��Ƭ and College of New Rochelle share a deep commitment to the value of service as expressed in both of their mottos Inserviendo Consumere (consumed in service) and that is deeply enriched by the College of New Rochelle’s motto, which is Serviam (I will serve.) Together these two mottos form an inspiration and a foundation for all of us to continue in service. This award is very special to me, but more importantly a recognition to all of us tonight that we are all joined by a shared commitment to service.”

The gala concluded with a special video previewing Mercy’s 75th Anniversary celebrations set to launch in fall 2025—a nod to its rich history and a celebration of its continued evolution.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced that it has joined JED Campus in support of student well-being and mental health. The program is a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation (JED) designed to help schools evaluate and strengthen their mental health, substance misuse, and suicide prevention programs and systems to ensure that schools have the strongest possible mental health safety nets. Currently, nearly 500 campuses are engaged in the JED Campus program, reaching more than six million students in 44 states, and the District of Columbia.

“At 91��Ƭ, we are deeply committed to fostering a campus environment where every student feels supported in their mental health and well-being,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “By partnering with The Jed Foundation, we are taking a proactive and strategic approach to ensuring that our students have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Mental health is essential to academic success, and this collaboration is an important step in strengthening our efforts to create a healthier, more resilient campus community.”

“The college years are the age when many mental health issues first manifest, and it can be a time of significant stress and pressure,” said John MacPhee, Chief Executive Officer of JED. “JED Campus helps schools by working with them to evaluate what their college or university is doing to support student emotional health and well-being and find practical ways to augment these efforts in a comprehensive way. We believe that the implementation of a campus-wide approach to mental health will lead to safer, healthier communities, and likely greater student retention.”

By joining JED Campus, 91��Ƭ demonstrates a commitment to the emotional well-being of its students. JED Campuses embark on a multi-year strategic collaboration that not only assesses and enhances the work that is already being done but also helps create positive, lasting, systemic changes in the campus community. The program provides schools with a framework for supporting student mental health, as well as assessment tools, feedback reports, a strategic plan, and ongoing support from the JED Higher Education team.

“We are so pleased to be part of the JED Campus family,” said Colleen Powers, executive director of the health and wellness at 91��Ƭ. “I am excited to begin this collaborative work which will greatly enhance our mental health supports and resources for the benefit of the entire Mercy community.”

91��Ƭ’s membership in JED Campus begins with establishing an interdisciplinary, campus-wide team to assess, support and implement program, policy, and system improvements and completing a confidential, self-assessment survey on its mental health promotion, substance use, and suicide prevention efforts. Upon completion of the assessment, JED subject matter experts provide schools with a comprehensive feedback report identifying successes and opportunities for enhancements. Over the course of four years, Mercy will collaborate with JED to help implement enhancements. All self-assessment responses and feedback reports are confidential.

Today, 91��Ƭ announced the appointment of Joseph Del Toro as its new chief financial officer. Del Toro is an accomplished financial leader with over 25 years of experience in financial leadership, strategic planning and operational management, making him a valuable addition to the University’s leadership team. In his role as CFO, he will oversee the university’s financial strategy, budgeting and long-term fiscal sustainability.

“We are thrilled to welcome Joe Del Toro as our new Chief Financial Officer,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��Ƭ. “His expertise will be instrumental in guiding our financial future and ensuring we can continue to advance our mission of providing a high-quality education for our students.”

“I am eager to bring my skills and passion to Mercy, where I look forward to driving sustainable growth and advancing the organization's mission,” said new 91��Ƭ CFO Joseph Del Toro.

Prior to joining Mercy, Del Toro served as partner and CFO at Argand Partners, a middle-market private equity firm where he advised portfolio company CFOs and oversaw the financial operations of the firm and the funds it managed. Previously, he was CFO at The Topps Company, Undertone and Novitex Enterprise Solutions, where he professionalized operations, restructured financial processes and prepared companies for successful acquisition. He holds a degree in Mathematics from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard.

Del Toro is deeply passionate about and inspired by Mercy’s mission. As the son of Cuban immigrants and someone who participated in mentorship programs in college, he firmly believes education is a lever for equity and opportunity. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous volunteer organizations and non-profit boards. Most recently, he joined the Board of Directors of Latino U College Access, a non-profit that empowers high achieving, low-income youth on their journeys to and through college so that they may reach their potential.

Dr. Greenwood is forward thinking relative to critical concerns faced by educational stakeholders—including student success, career advancement and higher education sustainability.

Beyond her administrative achievements, Dr. Greenwood has had a distinguished career as a physical therapist and professor of physical therapy and is a fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP). Her contributions to the field have earned her numerous awards and recognition.
